I created "Running Mouths," a mini magazine that captures community culture by blending Swiss and Postmodern design principles, my personal experiences, and published poetry to create a dynamic, grid-breaking aesthetic.

Overview

"Running Mouths" is a print-focused experimental magazine that serves as a visual archive of family, friendship, fruits, and other "F-words." By exploring the intersection of typography, imagery, and negative space, the publication seeks to turn personal community narratives into a cohesive, design-forward experience.

Process

  • Design Fusion: I drew inspiration from Swiss design for its clean, grid-anchored structure, while incorporating Postmodernism through irregular overlays and fragmented text to emphasize thematic depth
  • Technical Iteration: I navigated the complexities of print production, moving from RGB to CMYK color schemes and ensuring all visual assets met strict 300 dpi standards
  • Typography as Shape: I experimented with type manipulation, such as creating custom ligatures from Times New Roman and treating letters as graphic elements, to push the boundaries of traditional editorial design
Product

The magazine features a highly stylized, print-ready layout that uses:

  • Dynamic Hierarchy: A diverse shift in scale, utilizing full-bleed imagery against small text blocks and drop caps to guide the reader's eye with ease
  • Grid-Breaking Logic: I established a reliable grid system for structural balance, intentionally breaking it at key moments to maintain visual interest and Postmodern flair
  • Experimental Alignments: I combined justified text, poetry, and prose layouts to echo the visual rhythm of the stories being told
Reflection

This project deepened my understanding of how fundamental design principles, like balance, scale, and grids, provide a necessary foundation for intentional creative disruption. I learned that even in a digital-first world, mastering the technical constraints of print is vital to executing a clear, cohesive vision.
